Most people know these teeth as baby teeth, though they are also sometimes called milk teeth or primary teeth. In all, children have 20 baby teeth - 10 on the top and 10 on the bottom. These teeth act as placeholders for the adult teeth that grow in after the baby teeth fall out.
They help him or her chew, speak and smile. They also hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums. When a baby tooth is lost too early, the permanent teeth can drift into the empty space and make it difficult for other adult teeth to find room when they come in. This can make teeth crooked or crowded.
